Care Guide: Six Ames Raccoon Knit

Six Ames is a bestseller for us year after year – loved for its light, fluffy, and incredibly soft raccoon quality.

The characteristic softness comes from the fine underfur of the raccoon. The fibers are light, airy, and provide that very special fluffy feel that makes the sweater both warm and almost weightless on the body.

The wool is collected gently during the shedding season through careful combing. Six Ames has collaborated with the same supplier for over ten years – focusing on quality and responsibility throughout the entire process.

The result is knitwear that feels luxurious, timeless, and made to last 🤍

Knitwear from Six Ames has become a signature element in their collections. Raccoon fur is most often used in exclusive blends, and it's rare to find garments made of pure raccoon fur – which makes these sweaters extra special.

Raccoon wool is a luxurious and rare fiber, known for its exceptional softness, lightweight warmth, and natural fluffiness. The hollow structure of the fibers provides insulating properties without weight, making the garments cozy, airy, and comfortable to wear.

Does it need washing?

Raccoon fur has natural properties that allow the fibers to resist odor and wick away moisture. Therefore, the garment rarely needs washing. In fact, we always recommend airing out the sweater rather than washing it. Often, this is more than enough to refresh it and preserve both its softness and appearance over time.

How to freshen it up

The best way to maintain your sweater is to hang it outdoors in fresh air, preferably for a few hours, but out of direct sunlight. You can also lay it flat in a well-ventilated room. Humid air, such as in the bathroom after a shower, can help refresh the fibers and restore their airy feel. Less washing means a longer lifespan.

If washing is necessary

Should washing still be necessary, gentle hand washing in cold water with a liquid detergent intended for wool or silk is recommended. The garment must not be wrung out, and it should never be tumble dried. Raccoon fur can shrink by up to five percent, even with careful treatment. At the same time, the material will often feel even softer and fluffier after washing – as long as it is treated correctly.

Drying and shaping

After washing, excess water should be gently squeezed out before the garment is laid flat on a towel. Reshape the sweater back to its original form and let it dry flat. Hanging to dry can cause the material to stretch and lose its shape.

Steam and wrinkles

Raccoon knitwear should not be ironed. If you wish to remove creases or refresh the structure, you can gently use steam from a distance, without direct contact with the fibers. This will also help to enhance the natural fluffiness.

Storage and pilling

The sweater should always be stored flat in a drawer or on a shelf, protected from direct sunlight. Hanging storage over time can cause the garment to lose its shape. It is natural for some pilling to occur with use, and some colors may be more prone to it than others. This can be easily and gently removed with a lint comb.

Knitwear made from raccoon fur is an investment in both comfort and quality. With proper care – and especially by prioritizing airing over washing – the sweater will retain its softness, shape, and characteristic fluffy appearance for many years.

If you have any questions about quality, fit, or maintenance, we are always happy to help. We want you to enjoy your Six Ames sweater as much as we enjoy stocking it 🤍
